Democratic candidate is endorsed by anti-police organization in Florida
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association is accusing Florida Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum of being “hostile toward law enforcement” because he signed a radical organization’s “Freedom Pledge” that contains anti-police rhetoric.
The pledge supports social-style “Freedom Papers,” which declares “police and prisons have no place in ‘justice.’” The pledge also talks about how police were never meant to protect and serve and how they started as “slave catchers” hired by wealthy plantation owners.
Gillium Signs Anti Police Pledge
Since the pledge signing, the Broward Sheriffs’ Office Deputies Association has broken away from the county’s embattled sheriff, Scott Israel, and has since endorsed Republican nominee Ron DeSantis. Israel has been campaigning for Gillum. Meanwhile, DeSantis has said if he is elected into office, he would fire Israel.
According to Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association President, Jeff Bell, DeSantis has stood with law enforcement and supported them in their mission to keep communities safe. Israel, on the other hand, has been facing scrutiny for his handling of the deadly shooting in February at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
Gillum has not only signed the “Freedom Pledge”, but he has also posted photos of himself on Facebook posing with the co-founder of Dream Defenders. This photo is dated back to September 2014. He has also taped at a June debate saying he is “pleased and proud” to have sneaked food to the activists during a 30-day sleep-in protest at the Florida State Capital in Tallahassee which took place in 2013.
Come to find out, Dream Defenders Action Fund, a c4 nonprofit arm of Dream Defenders, reportedly committed $3.5 million to help Gillum win the Democratic primary against Gwen Graham. In March 2014, Gillum talked about how we should “recruit, train and connect thousands more local organizers and activists, particularly in underrepresented communities and regions of the country.”
Dream Defenders announced that Gillum is the first politician that their group has ever endorsed in its six-year history. They said Gillum’s platform is critical to altering the politics of Florida and making the state a model for “progressive governance.”
