ARLINGTON, VA – The American Police Officers Alliance will focus part of 2019 on advocating issues relating to civilian police oversight boards.
Civilian oversight boards are often floated as a popular idea after news breaks of police misconduct or an officer involved shooting. These oversight boards have been long criticized by both the political left and right for inconsistent discipline, budget problems and selecting members at the desires of the politically connected.
“As more municipalities consider civilian oversight boards to discipline police misconduct, there have been numerous issues that have plagued the effectiveness of these boards,“ said Dan Stuebs, Executive Director of the American Police Officers Alliance. “The American Police Officers Alliance is committed to engaging the public and the voters on the issues that currently plague oversight boards already in place. From inconsistent discipline of officers in New York City to excessive budgets in Chicago, we are committed to educating the issues relating to these boards and oppose any future efforts that maybe contested by ballot measures in 2019.”
