There has perhaps never been a moment in modern American History where our Law Enforcement Officers have been so publicly vilified by segments of the public, and likewise, the very people elected by the public to lead. The very same Americans heralded for their service in times of national tragedy, like the 9/11 terrorist attacks, have now been forgotten by those who had said “never forget.” This betrayal of Law Enforcement has happened along partisan ideological lines. Democrats and a constituency of Radical Leftists are now villainizing Law Enforcement, while President Donald Trump has continuously come to their defense. And Police Organizations and Unions have taken notice.
As civil order is disintegrating in cities in the country defunding their Police Departments or outright refusing to clamp down on violent rioters, Donald Trump has continuously called for “Law & Order,” and has drawn widespread support from Police Unions. One major endorsement he has earned is from the National Organizations of Police Unions. This association, which represents over 1,000 police organizations and unions, has officially endorsed Trump’s re-election campaign. According to The Hill, the association had this to say: “Our endorsement recognizes your steadfast and very public support for our men and women on the front lines, especially during this time of unfair and inaccurate opprobrium being directed at our members by so many.” According to their letter of endorsement to the President, the endorsement on behalf of over 241,000 sworn officers is also due to “your directing The Attorney General to aggressively prosecute those who attack our officers.” They also cited the President’s permanent funding for victims’ of 9/11 families, the Project Safe Neighborhoods project, and ultimately, “your…recognition that America’s Law Enforcement officers, just like any other citizens, have Constitutional rights, too.”
Another major endorsement for President Trump is from the International Union of Police Associations. Much like their colleagues at the National Organization of Police Unions, have decided to endorse the President because he respects them and has their interests in mind. In their letter of endorsement they state: “President Trump has done more for Law Enforcement in the past two and a half years than was accomplished in the eight years that preceded his election. He has even undone some of the harmful acts of his predecessor.” President Trump has reversed course from the Obama Administration in the following ways: this administration reinstated providing Police with “life-saving” military surplus, including armored vehicles, championed the Mental Health and Wellness Act, expanding Police access to mental health resources, and resumed capital punishment of Federal Prisoners. And perhaps the most obvious statement, as noted in their letter, is that ““Every top Democrat currently running for this office has vilified the police and made criminals out to be victims. They seem to take any union’s support for granted.”
Should it really be such a surprise that police organizations are coming out in droves to support President Donald Trump? Each and every night we turn on the news to more shootings, murders, assaults, and the complete vilification of Law Enforcement from the most powerful Liberal voices in the country. President Trump treats our Law Enforcement officers with their respect they deserve, believes in protecting them, and most importantly treats them like fellow Americans and human beings instead of “enemies of the state.”
Local and State organizations representing Law Enforcement are often difficult to pin down when examining how they award endorsements for candidates in Federal Elections. In many years, police organizations abstain from endorsing candidates altogether. In some cases, the unions tend to endorse in accordance with their state’s general political leanings. Read more here.
